Airspace changes for Williamtown/Newcastle

written by australianaviation.com.au | November 19, 2009

CASA has announced changes to airspace arrangements in the Williamtown/Newcastle area following a review of a number of studies by the organisation’s Office of Airspace Regulation.

From November 19, Class E airspace will apply from 4500ft up to 8500ft when ATC is not operating, and class E airspace aircraft operating to instrument flight rules will be provided with separation by en route air traffic controllers from Brisbane Centre.

It is expected the new Class E regulations will only operate on weekends and during the ADF’s Christmas stand down period when military ATC controllers are not on duty.

Airspace procedures around Williamtown have received major criticism in recent years, particularly from former CASA chairman Dick Smith, prompting the OAR to implement its review.
