Air New Zealand’s chief revenue officer has tweeted that the airline has seen a “reasonably significant” spike in bookings after the country announced plans to ease its lockdown.
Just four days earlier, Cam Wallace tweeted that the airline sold just one A320’s worth of seats for the whole month of May.
The news preceded the airline releasing an increased schedule on Wednesday morning to reflect the move from “level 4” to “level 3” coronavirus restrictions, published below.
Forward revenue performance for @FlyAirNZ continues at around 1% of demand. We got one A320 worth of sales yesterday for May travel. June was better at 1.5% albeit that LY was weak! Very keen to see whether the clarification of level restrictions today has an impact. @andykirton

However, Air New Zealand general manager Scott Carr was more cautious in his assessment of the progress made.
“We have made some slight adjustments to our domestic schedule in the coming weeks,” Carr said.
“That includes adding several services a week between Auckland and Napier and Auckland and Tauranga.
“We’ll also be adding additional capacity between Christchurch and Dunedin with flights in and out of Dunedin across the week.”
Reasonably significant spike in bookings from 1605 on the @FlyAirNZ website and via the App. The line graph is trending upwards, haven't seen that in weeks! @andykirton

New Zealand had previously enforced one of the toughest lockdowns in the world, but new rules that come into effect from midnight on 27 April will allow some schools and businesses, such as takeaways, to open.
The news follows Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announcing on Tuesday that the country was on the “road to recovery” as the number of coronavirus cases dropped.
