No it’s not an illusion – rare Il-76 visits Perth

An example of the very rare Ilyushin Il-76MF has made a visit to Australia, with JY-JID ‘361’ operated by Jordan International Air Cargo visiting Perth and Melbourne this week.

The freighter arrived from Colombo, Sri Lanka as flight ‘RJZ361’ on October 25 before later departing to Melbourne.

The Il-76MF is a stretched and re-engined (with Aviadvigatel PS-90As) development of the Soviet era Il-76. JY-JID is reportedly one of two Il-76MFs operated by Jordan International Air Cargo.

I work at Tullamarine, thismorning it was sitting on an unused taxiway.

@Rhys – I am not surprised it was sitting on an unused taxiway considering its cargo! When it was at Perth it was parked well away from everything, sitting all on its own. Had to have a laugh at ATC when the crew of the IL-76 reported “Ready” – ATC immediately asked how long they would be sitting on the runway prior to takeoff, the reply from the crew “less than a minute” then ATC issued “line up. cleared for immediate takeoff”
