Jetstar has confirmed it will be moving in to the new Terminal 4 at Melbourne Airport from November 10.
The low-cost carrier will join Tigerair Australia at Tullamarine’s newest terminal.
Jetstar said in a statement on its website although most domestic flights would move to Terminal 4, services with flight numbers between JQ1 and JQ399 would stay at Terminal 2, Tullamarine’s international terminal.
Currently, Jetstar and Qantas’s domestic flights operate out of Terminal 1, which is at the opposite end of Melbourne Airport. Co-locating with Qantas meant eligible members of Qantas’s frequent flyer program were able to access the Qantas lounges prior to boarding their Jetstar flight.
Jetstar said passenger would still be eligible to use the Qantas Club and Business Lounge in Terminal 3 prior to their flight after the airline moved to Terminal 4. However it cautioned passengers that “there will be no boarding announcements or flight information screens at the lounge to alert you of any updates or changes to your flight”.
“If you wish to use the lounge, please ensure you check in, drop any bags and get to the gate in time for your flight,” Jetstar said.
“It’s approximately a 15-minute walk between terminals 1 and 4, and check-in and bag drop close 30 minutes before departure.”
Tigerair was the first airline to be based at Terminal 4, when it shifted out of the old tin shed at Tullamarine on August 18. Regional Express (Rex) is also due to move out of Terminal 3 and join Tigerair and Jetstar in Terminal 4 in the period ahead.
Terminal 4 features new technology automated checkin kiosks and bag drop facilities, as well as an expanded departure lounge and more shopping and food choices.
Melbourne Airport said in a fact sheet Terminal 4 was designed to handle up to 10 million passengers a year.
“Passengers will experience a seamless journey through Terminal 4, which is the first terminal in the Asia Pacific region to open as a complete self-service operation,” Melbourne Airport said.

says:Great. Qantas diminished the attractiveness of QP membership for JQ passengers in SYD when it closed the lounge in T2 a couple of years ago. Now they’re doing the same in MEL. It wouldn’t be so bad if QF maintained pre JQ frequencies to many domestic ports (such as HBA, LST, OOL) but they forced many domestic passengers on to JQ when they commenced operations in 2004. QF declared that all JQ passengers with QP membership were welcome to use the lounges, but they’ve now made that so difficult at Australia’s two busiest airports. Yes, QF declares that JQ passengers are still welcome to use the lounges in SYD and MEL, but they’ve made it so difficult now that it’s just not worth the bother.
