Opinion: Breaking Barriers Early in Pilot Training
Skill, drive and merit should dictate success in our industry – not the person in the cockpit’s background
Australia is uniquely positioned in the global aviation community with intercity connectivity dependent on air travel across vast distances, varied terrain, weather, and a strong international flight training reputation for producing quality pilots. From all around the world, airlines and students have chosen Australia to fly with professional schools and academies in safe, well-maintained aircraft. This is not to say the industry is without its shortcomings.
Getting started can often be the hardest part of pursuing flight training where many may feel intimidated, confused or even unwelcome. This is often made worse when perceptions or attitudes erode a potential pilot’s dream to fly. They may be under the impression women can’t be in the flight deck, or an individual’s Indigenous background will prevent a successful career in the air. If someone has the dream and the will to chase it, Australia can lead the way in making it happen.
