From Toowoomba to the World
airports edition
One of the things that first struck me when I started reporting on the aviation beat is how Australia’s airports were forced to do much of the heavy lifting during COVID with little help. Or often, thanks.
The biggest constraint, of course, was that many airports were excluded from JobKeeper payments because they were technically council-owned. When I spoke to Mildura’s chairman, Peter O’Donnell, he sounded bleak back in May last year. “Nearly every bit of support we’re looking at is unavailable to us despite the fact we’re running 95 per cent down on revenue, and we’ve laid off 60 per cent of our staff,” he said. It was a situation that echoed up and down the country.
