Don’t let teething problems fool you, the point-to-point carrier isn’t in retreat

The surprise last month wasn’t that Bonza, the low-cost carrier whose point-to-point service model had set tongues wagging all over the Australian aviation landscape, was cutting five routes – it’s that it cut them so soon.

Bonza had only seen wheels go up on its maiden flight in January, and yet come July it was already axing its services from Sunshine Coast to Coffs Harbour, Sunshine Coast to Port Macquarie, Sunshine Coast to Tamworth, Cairns to Mackay, and Toowoomba to Whitsunday Coast. The Sunshine Coast to Tamworth route, in particular, only launched on 6 May.
